Booked is made by BuyBye Inc., Ontario, Canada. This page says what the app collects, what it does with it, and what it never does.
The short version
- Your scripts, rehearsals and self-tapes are not used to train AI. Not by us, and not by the services we use.
- Booked never uploads your self-tapes. They stay on your phone and in your Photos library unless you share them or your iPhone backs them up.
- A script’s text (and, for scans, the page images) goes to two services to make the reader: one to understand the script, one to voice the other characters. Neither trains on it.
- The app makes an anonymous account the first time it opens. You only need to sign in for the audition log.
- Subscriptions are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details. We keep a record of what Apple tells us about your subscription so we can provide what you paid for.
- You can delete your account from inside the app. It removes your account and your audition log for good.
What the app collects
Scripts
When you import a PDF, the app reads its text on your phone. That text is sent to a language model service (OpenAI) that identifies the characters and their lines. For scans, the page images go with it. The other characters’ lines are sent as text to a voice service (ElevenLabs) that records them. Both use it only to build your reader, do not train on it, and may hold it briefly for abuse checks under their own policies. The PDF file itself stays on your phone.
Rehearsals
While you rehearse, the app listens for your lines so the reader knows when to come in. That listening happens on the phone, using Apple’s on-device speech recognition. No audio of you leaves the phone during a rehearsal.
Self-tapes
Takes are recorded with the phone’s camera and microphone and saved to your Photos library, with a copy kept in the app until Photos has it. Booked never uploads them. They leave your phone only if you share one, or through your own iCloud backup and iCloud Photos.
Your account
On first launch the app creates an anonymous account: an ID and a creation date, with no name, email or content. It is what the Support ID in Settings points to, so we can find your records if you write in. Everything the app does for you, including a subscription, is tied to that ID. If you sign in with Apple or Google, the sign-in attaches to the same ID and we receive the name and email address the provider gives us, or Apple’s private relay address if you hide your email.
Audition log
If you track your auditions, your log (projects, roles, dates, outcomes and the notes you type) is stored in our database (Supabase, hosted in Canada) so it follows you across devices. The log needs a sign-in.
Subscriptions and purchases
Subscriptions are bought through Apple. We never see your card or your Apple ID password. Apple, through our subscription service (Superwall), tells us what happened to your subscription: a purchase, a renewal, a cancellation, an expiry or a refund, with the product, the price and currency, the dates, and the offer code if one was used. We keep those events keyed by Apple’s transaction identifier and linked to your account ID. We use them to switch the reader on and off, to answer refund questions, and to award referral months. Our server also records what it costs us to build each reader, as an amount and a time, not as script text, so a subscription stays within what it pays for.
Codes and referrals
If you type a code in the app, we record the code you typed, when, and whether it led to a subscription. When the code is a friend’s referral code, we also record which account it belongs to, so your friend can earn a free month. Whoever gave you a code can learn how many people used it, never who. If you share your own code, the app shows you how many people used it and how many free months you earned, nothing about them.
Free scripts we add by hand
If we add a free script to your account after you write in, we note the grant against your Support ID, with the date and what it covered. If you wrote to us, we keep that email.
Analytics
We use Mixpanel to understand how the app is used: which screens are reached, whether an import succeeded or failed and why, whether a rehearsal was completed, whether a code was entered or a free month claimed, and the like. These events carry counts, types and durations, and are tied to your account ID. They never contain script text, character names, project names, file names, audio or transcripts. We do not use this data for advertising, and we do not share it with data brokers. If you would rather not be counted, write to us with your Support ID and we switch it off for your account.
Advertising measurement
To learn which ads bring people to Booked, our subscription service (Superwall) may match an install to the ad that led to it and report subscriptions back to the ad network (such as Meta or Apple Search Ads). This uses no advertising identifier and does not follow you across other apps.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not use your scripts, rehearsals or self-tapes to train AI, and the services we use are barred from doing so.
- We never upload your self-tapes.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and we never use an advertising identifier.
Services we rely on
- OpenAI: understands a script so the reader knows who says what. Training is off.
- ElevenLabs: voices the other characters’ lines. Training is off.
- Supabase: stores accounts, audition logs, subscription events, codes and referral months, in Canada.
- Fly.io: runs our own server, in Toronto. It passes script text to OpenAI and ElevenLabs on your behalf, keeps the usage ledger (what each reader cost us, grants, and subscription status under Apple’s transaction identifier), and holds no script text or audio once the reader is built.
- Mixpanel: product analytics, as described above.
- Superwall: subscriptions, Apple’s subscription notifications, and advertising measurement.
- Apple: sign in, purchases, refunds, and on-device speech recognition.
- Google: sign in, if you choose it.
Diagnostics
If the app crashes and your iPhone is set to share crash reports, Apple sends us one. It describes what the app was doing, never your script or your camera.
Where your data is processed
Accounts, audition logs, subscription records and the usage ledger are stored in Canada. OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Mixpanel and Superwall are in the United States, so script text, usage events and subscription events are processed there, under this policy.
Why we are allowed to
For the EU and UK: we process your data to provide what you asked for (the reader, the takes, the log, the subscription), and on our legitimate interest in understanding how the app is used, keeping subscriptions within what they pay for, and learning which ads bring people to it. The phone’s permission prompts cover the phone’s features. You can ask us to stop the analytics or ad measurement for your account at any time.
Keeping and deleting
Scripts, takes and the reader’s audio live on your phone and go when you delete them or the app; our server keeps none of them. Your account and audition log stay until you delete your account in Settings. Deleting removes the account, the log, your referral code and any free months you had not yet claimed, for good. Analytics events stay for up to two years under an ID that no longer links to anyone, and we delete them too if you ask. Subscription and purchase records are kept, under Apple’s transaction identifier and no longer linked to a name or email, for as long as the law and Apple’s refund process require. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel an Apple subscription; see the support page.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Deleting your account from Settings does most of this. For anything else, write to us; we answer within a month. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Booked is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has used the app and we hold their data, write to us and we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the app will tell you before the change takes effect. The date at the top is the date of the current version.
